To See

Buddha Park – just a walking distance from the town this well-maintained Park set in the backdrop of majestic mountains is a must-visit place among the tourists. Constructed between 2006-13, this park has a statue of Lord Buddha which is 130 ft high. Apart from the statue, the park area has a large prayer hall, a museum a meditation center and a lake called Cho Djo Lake. The park was constructed to pay respect to the 2550 birth anniversary of Lord Buddha.

The New Ralong Monastery –  This is also known as the ‘Palchen Choeling Monastic Institute’. As the road to the old monastery is difficult in order to make the monastery more accessible, a new monastery was built in the year 1995. This is located around 10 km from Ravangla and 3km from the old monastery. Despite being newly built this building retains the beauty and detailing of traditional Tibetan architecture. The monastery is famous for its extensive collection of paintings. Another major feature of this place is the annual festival called Pang Lhabsol where Mount Kanchenjunga is worshipped. This festival takes place in the month of August – September.

Old Ralong Monastery – This is one of the most sacred places for the followers of Kagyu traditions of Buddhism and one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim. This old monastery was built in the year 1768 by the 4th Chogyal (king) of Sikkim. Legend is when the 4th Chogyal returned from Tibet after his successful completion of the pilgrimage, the 9th Karmapa (head of the Kagyu sect) decided to perform a blessing ceremony. According to the ritual, he threw some grain from Tsurphu Monastery in Tibet. These grains fell on the ground of Ravang which was witnessed by devotees. The decision to construct a monastery in that place was taken. This old Monastery is approximately 13 km from Ravangla. To reach this monastery trekking is the only option and the road is difficult.

Bon Monastery –  Established in 1980 this is the only monastery in Sikkim that belongs to the Bon sect. In the whole country, there are only 2 Bon Monasteries. It is located at Kewzing Village at a distance of 6 km from Ravangla. The Monastery offers a majestic view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Built in the Indo-Tibetan style the monastery houses some remarkable paintings. 

Kheunpheling Carpet Centre –  This is situated in the Tibetan Refugee Settlement Camp above Ravangla Market. This carpet centre was set up to promote and preserve the traditional Sikkimese Handicraft, artwork and handloom work. High-quality carpets, shawls, and woollen items are produced. It is a popular place among tourists.
Rayong Sunrise View Point  – The approximate distance from Ravangla is 9km. Situated on the Ravangla – Damthang road.  Wrapped in unmatchable natural beauty this viewpoint is an ideal spot to enjoy the breathtaking view of the sunrise. This is also a perfect place to enjoy the view of the great Himalayan peaks like Mount Kabru, Mount Pandim, Mount Narsing etc. 

Ralong Hot Springs – It is popularly known as Ralong Chu. Natural steaming saunas are believed to have strong therapeutic power. These natural spas are located in the midst of tranquil nature. The place could be reached by nearly an hour’s walk from the Ralong monastery.

Temi Tea Garden –  Situated at a distance of 19 km from Ravangla this tea garden is the only tea garden in the state of Sikkim and one of the most beautiful Tea Gardens in India. Temi is a place where one can witness the beauty of nature at its best. Wandering in the midst of valleys and mountain roads and the tiny village of Temi, and a guided tour inside the tea plant is an unforgettable experience. Temi offers an enthralling view of Kanchenjunga.

Maenam Hill –  It is the traditional meditation spot for the monks. This hill is situated inside the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary. Distance from Ravangla is 12km. The natural beauty of Maenam Hill is unparalleled. Situated at an altitude of more than 10000 ft it offers a clear view of Kanchenjunga and the surrounding valleys in the backdrop of Tista and Rangeet River and lush green deep forests. The wildlife sanctuary is the home of Red Panda, deer, Himalayan Black beer and several species of birds. Maenam Sanctuary is a very popular trekking expedition. Permission has to be taken from the Forest Department at Ravangla.

Weather

Ravangla being situated at a high altitude enjoys cool pleasant weather most of the time. The summer ranges from April to 1st half of June. The temperature during summer varies from 23c to a minimum 15c. Winter (November to February) is extremely cold here and often witness snowfall. July to the first half of September is a monsoon.
