Namchi
It is the district headquarters of South Sikkim. Situated at an altitude of nearly 5500 feet, Namchi offers a breathtaking view of the Kanchenjunga and the Himalayan range and also the Rangit valley. In spite of being situated in a picturesque location, Namchi was earlier not very popular among tourists. But in the last few years, Namchi has emerged as a very important and popular tourist destination in the tourism circuit of Sikkim. Namchi itself is a busy town with a bustling market. It is just a 2.30 hour drive from the state capital Gangtok and quite well connected with the other parts of the state too.
Places of Interest
Samdrupste Monastery
This remains one of the major attractions of Namchi. Samdruptse is just 6 km from the Namchi town. Samdrupste means ‘’wish fulfilling hill ‘’. It houses an awe-inspiring statue of the patron saint of Sikkim Guru Padmasambhava. The statue is 45 Meters tall and is the tallest statue of Guru Padmasambhava in the world. This outstanding statue is seen in different parts of Sikkim and even Darjeeling. The foundation stone of this statue was laid by His Holiness Dalai Lama in the year 1997 and this was finally opened to the public in the year 2004. From the backside of the statue, one can enter into the monastery. The Premise of this place offers a dazzling view of Kanchenjunga and the surrounding range and mountain forests. The scenic view of this area is truly ravishing.
Namchi Rock Garden
situated actually below Samdrupste in a distance of a few minutes this beautiful rock Garden is an ideal place for leisure tourism. The garden houses a wide range of orchids and different flowers and plantations., waterbodies, and fun activities for the children. Situated in the midst of nature this rock garden offers a breathtaking view of the mountains. Kanchenjunga is clearly visible.
Ngadak Monastery
it is just 2 km from the Namchi town. This is regarded as one of the oldest monasteries in Sikkim. This was originally built in the 17th century by Tensung Namgyal. Albeit the old original building was destroyed in the earthquake and a new structure was constructed. An ideal destination for people seeking serenity and tranquillity.
Char Dham
Situated at the top of Solophok hill, this newly built temple complex has become one of the prime tourist destinations in Sikkim. This temple complex is also known as Siddheswar Dham. It was inaugurated on 8th Nov in the year 2011. This temple complex is just 5 km southwest of the town. This place brings together the replicas of some great Indian pilgrimage sites which include ‘Dwadash (12) Jyotirlingas’ and ‘char (4) Dhams’ and a 33-meter tall gigantic statue of Lord Shiva in a sitting posture. Just beneath the statue is the main Shiva temple situated. This entire pilgrimage complex is at the top of the hill so naturally, it offers a magnificent view of the surrounding ranges and the valleys.
Temi Tea Garden
Situated at a distance of 20 km this tea garden is the only tea garden in the state of Sikkim and one of the most beautiful Tea Gardens in India. Temi is a place where one can witness the beauty of nature at its best. Wandering in the midst of valleys and mountain roads and the tiny village of Temi, and a guided tour inside the tea plant is an unforgettable experience. Temi offers an enthralling view of Kanchenjunga.
Tereybhir
16 km from Namchi. This is a nature lovers paradise. The word Bhir actually means cliff in Nepali. This is a steep long ridge that stretches nearly 1 km with a deep gorge at one side. The ridge walk gives you an opportunity to mingle with nature. The place is blessed with an abundance of natural beauty. The clear view of Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills and the confluence of Teesta and Rangeet is something which no one wants to miss.
IHCAE
The Institute of Himalayan Center for Adventure and ecotourism at Chemchey village is just 15-16 km from Namchi town. This centre offers training courses on Adventure activities. The compound is open to tourists which offers a superlative view of the Himalayan mountain ranges.
How to reach
Namchi is 97 km from NJP and 102 km from Bagdogra airport. Private cars and bus communication both are available.
The best time to visit
March to 2nd week of June is ideal and October to November end is also ideal.
